چکیده

Three-input TOFFOLI gates are heavily used when performing classical logic operations on quantum data, e.g., in reversible arithmetic circuits. However, in physical implementations TOFFOLI gates are decomposed into six CNOT gates and several one-qubit gates. Though this decomposition has been known for at least 10 years, we provide here the first demonstration of its CNOT-optimality. We first prove that any circuit (i) containing less than six CNOT gates and (ii) implementing a diagonal operator, can be rearranged to form the cosine-sine decomposition of a related operator. Leveraging the canonicity of such decompositions to limit one-qubit gates appearing in respective circuits, we completely classify three-qubit diagonal operators by their CNOT-cost. As a consequence, we deduce that the TOFFOLI cannot be implemented using fewer than six CNOTs. Circuit-analysis techniques developed in our work also produce new lower bounds for related gates and the n-qubit analogue of the TOFFOLI.

On the CNOT-cost of TOFFOLI gates

The three-input TOFFOLI gate is the workhorse of circuit synthesis for classical logic operations on quantum data, e.g., reversible arithmetic circuits. In physical implementations, however, TOFFOLI gates are decomposed into six CNOT gates and several one-qubit gates. Though this decomposition has been known for at least 10 years, we provide here the first demonstration of its CNOT-optimality. ...

Comparison of the cost metrics through investigation of the relation between optimal NCV and optimal NCT three-qubit reversible circuits

A breadth-first search method for determining optimal 3-qubit circuits composed of quantum NOT, CNOT, controlled-V and controlled-V+ (NCV) gates is introduced. Results are presented for simple gate count and for technology motivated cost metrics. The optimal NCV circuits are also compared to NCV circuits derived from optimal NOT, CNOT and Toffoli (NCT) gate circuits. The work presented here pro...

Quantum Circuit Simplification Using Templates

The synthesis of quantum circuits is a complex problem even for circuits with a small number of lines. At present, optimal synthesis is intractable and heuristic methods must be employed. In this paper, we consider the use of templates to simplify a quantum circuit initially found by other means. The templates tool presented here is a general approach to reversible and quantum circuit simplific...

On the advantages of using relative phase Toffolis with an application to multiple control Toffoli optimization

Various implementations of the Toffoli gate up to a relative phase have been known for years. The advantage over regular Toffoli gate is their smaller circuit size. However, their use has been often limited to a demonstration of quantum control in designs such as those where the Toffoli gate is being applied last or otherwise for some specific reasons the relative phase does not matter. It has ...
